Mouse on Mars

Touring Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam Oct 22 to Nov 13, 2010

Mouse on Mars are either completely unknown or praised to the skies, either reviled or revered. So it goes, in a word, with pioneers, and Mouse on Mars are indeed nothing short of pioneers of electronic music.

As such, they were the first to spread the word abroad about Germany’s booming electronic scene, which had long since emerged from the long shadow of its overlords, the band Kraftwerk. And Mouse on Mars chalked up successes in England, Japan and the US.

There, as in Germany, they surprised us by refusing to conform to the prevailing cliché of nerdy electro-tinkerers. Mouse on Mars did its part to blur the dividing lines between rock and dancefloor, between song and track: all of a sudden, “anything goes” was the watchword of a new generation of music.

Mouse on Mars is one of the few electronic bands to stand the test of time. Constantly reinventing themselves, they have taken electronica to new heights with a unique blend of sound annihilation, fragmented melodies and an impassioned hatred of conformity. For over a decade, Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner have sweated over burning consoles to create a new musical language, only to twist it again into thousands of myriad distortions. Mouse On Mars’ sound links them to the club-music scene, as do their many remixes and collaborations with members of the dance-music world. Yet their association with the formalized and utilitarian world of dance music is ironic, as the band’s raison d’etre is to place electronic flies in any aural ointment they choose to muck through. A series of 11 albums and numerous remixes has come off as primarily intent on dashing expectations, from the ambient-house ectoplasms of 1994’s Vulvaland and 1995’s slightly more structured Iaora Tahiti; to the flighty and funny electronics, spluttering horns and acoustic-guitar samples of 2000’s more “organic” Niun Niggung; to the forest of sonic porcupine quills that is Idiology. Radical Connector (2004) further granulated the MoM aesthetic into nine vaguely pop-oriented songs, ever heavier on the beats and increasingly hinging the tunes on the vocals and drumming of longtime collaborator Dodo Nkishi. Varcharz (2006) entirely recorded at Mouse on Mars’ St. Martin Ton Studios in Duesseldorf is their most live sounding and diverse studio album to date. Varcharz is spiked with catchy pop references, anarchic rock derangements and manga-style pathos.

Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner have been more than busy in the intervening years between albums. As well as the release of their live record, Live 04, on their own label Sonig, and a constant barrage of touring, they are collaborating with Mark E. Smith of The Fall as Von Südenfed. Both Toma and St. Werner produce independently for the Sonig label. St. Werner has released solo records under the Lithops and Neuter River moniker and acted as the artistic director of the Amsterdam Institute for Electronic Music, steim. Toma shared his producer talent with Moondog, Junior Boys, The Fall and Stereolab amongst others. Mouse on Mars are currently recording a new studio album and work on an orchestral piece to be premiered in 2011.

Like nothing ever Japan’s Boredoms return to Australia 10/10.

Unlike everything never Japan’s Boredoms will leave the breath from the room. BOREDOMSBOREDOMSBOREDOMSBOREDOMSBOREDOMSBOREDOMSBOREDOMS
There may be no other band in the world that has traced quite a path like Japan’s Boredoms.

Across over 20 years, founder and leader Eye, along with frequent collaborator Yoshimi, has taken the band on a cosmic road trip, from the early swamps of chaos through times of tribal frenzy, oceanic tranquility, and massive sonic constructions. Perhaps most remarkable is the unceasing commitment to vision above all else, and the effects of that Commitment. The influence of Boredoms in underground, experimental, noise, and performance-based music cannot be overstated.

The early Boredoms seemingly harnessed that chaotic energy and began melding it into a No Wave-influenced rock format. The first release under the name Boredoms appeared in 1986. The frenetic, maniacal live show cemented their reputation. The incredible rhythmic power, clever melodic punches, and sheer chaotic intensity of the band to play off each other in ways that had perhaps never been heard or seen before. The result was both well-earned rising popularity and something unheard-of: a major label deal, in Japan, for an incorrigibly independent band that demanded full control. Outside Japan, the Boredoms have made their mark as well. From their associations with bands like Sonic Youth to their explosive tours through the U.S. and Europe, the Boredoms were partially responsible for opening the eyes of listeners in this country to the possibilities of the Japanese music scene.

After the release of Chocolate Synthesizer, the Boredoms began to evolve away from the chaos-rock of their past. 1998′s Super Ae evoked tribal rhythms as well as electronicized krautrock…a trance-inducing set of songs filled with tribal elements. In their Super Roots series of records (1993-1999), Boredoms expanded their ideal of ecstatic, thunderous, repetitive music, steeped in power rock, electronic rhythms, and psychedelic incantations. At the time Eye also became more involved in DJing and dabbling in Japan’s rave culture, resulting in the Rebore series of Boredoms remix EPs. After a prolonged absence, their records “Seadrum/ House of Sun” were finally being released in 2005.

In 2007, released their first live album as “Super Roots 9″ and made an already legendary 77BOADRUM show came to real with 77 drums and 77 drummers on 07/07/07 in NYC. They also released their first live DVD “Live at Sunflancisco”. In 2008, 88BOADRUM show with 88 drummers on 08/08/08 in LA, the documentary film of 77BOADRUM has shown in the movie theater and the CD book about 77BOADRUM has released. In 2009, the last one of super roots series “Super Roots 10″ has ranched. BOADRUM has changed its style to EYE with 9 drummers and performed BOADRUM9 on 09/09/09.

After nearly two decades of noise, chaos, post-rock before there was such a thing, tribal Experimentation, remixing, trance-inducing feats of rhythmic intensity, lineup changes, Continued collaborations, and doing what they want regardless of trends and fashion, the Boredoms continue, and remain as vital as ever.

REGURGITATOR back on the fries… movin’ recordin’ tourin’

REGURGITATOR

After dipping toes in the bubbling grease of contemporary dance for Rockshow in Nov 2009 they dropped the strainer in the chip fryer, frittered away on some new years festival appearances along with a few shows in the past few months. Back in their classic 3 piece mode, after approaching Rockshow in this guise, and with Seja embarking on her own solo career they recently played some stand out performances (including Seja’s last keyboard stand with them) at the Brisbane Powerhouse 10th birthday… and sold out shows in Sydney and Melbourne. Back on the fries… they saturate the wrapper with new recordings, new tourings and a new soundtrack to cult classic Akira.

With Quan and Ben relocating to new home town Melbourne early this year they activated some fresh studio spaces in their recently acquired dwellings and started work on their first new material since the Love and Paranoia sessions in Rio de Janeiro in 2007. Quan has set up a recording blog here and see them use it… the tracks are currently being mixed by Casey Rice after some additional recording at Head Gap.. and will be released through digital outlets and physical forms in September.

On August 8 as part of the Graphic animation conference at the Sydney Opera House Regurgitator have been commissioned to produce a live score to the ground breaking Japanese anime film AKIRA.

Comic books, illustration, animation, music, multimedia and other new ways of telling stories have not only changed the face of our popular culture, they now define it. Graphic novels and comic art are now a leading source of inspiration for films, television, clothing, designers, musicians and artists the world over. GRAPHIC celebrates this brave new world in a weekend of specially commissioned productions – with musical responses to graphic art & stories, workshops, panels, a film program, a games exhibition and an animation competition. Highlight events include the Anime classic Akira with a live rescore by Regurgitator; Shaun Tan’s The Arrival live scored by Ben Walsh and the Orkestra of the Underground; and the big one – Neil Gaiman in the Concert Hall reading a new unpublished work, with specially commissioned live score by FourPlay and projected illustrations by legendary graphic artist Eddie Campbell.

Akira with live score by Regurgitator Akira is the benchmark film by which all other anime are judged, spawning countless imitators and defining many of the themes, concerns and style of the genre. Set in 2019 in post-World War Three Neo-Tokyo, this animated classic introduced the western world to adult-oriented Japanese animation and has been lauded worldwide as the movie that “started it all”. Akira started life as Katsuhiro Otomo’s epic 2,000+ page manga (Japanese comic book), before being adapted into an animated film in 1988. The film will be shown in the original Japanese language version with English subtitles and rescored live by Regurgitator. As Australia’s most renowned and successful experimental art-rockers, Regurgitator have achieved triple-platinum status – an astonishing feat for such an uncompromising band – who never shy away from the unusual, the untried, or indeed any genre that attracts their creative sensibility.
Tickets available from the Sydney Opera House
.

And now following this… Regurgitator embark on the most intensive headline tour since the 6 week long 2007 Amor e Paranoia tour with New Pants from China and I Heart Hiroshima… or the 2008 tour with guiding lights DEVO. For this latest slush in hot fat Regurgitator has invited new sensations from Melbourne RAT VS POSSUM and Brisbane’s bursting with joy LANEOUS & THE FAMILY YAH along for the fries. Plus for a special one-off show… DJ KRUSH from Japan will be joining Regurgitator for a double headliner in Brisbane on SEPT 18 at The Tivoli

RAT VS POSSUM
…play experimental pop music. Layered and looped, billion-part harmonies, tom-heavy percussion, drum samplers, jangly guitars, casio keyboards and loop pedal. They released their debut ‘Daughter of Sunshine’ in April through Sensory Projects. A collection of psychedelic, faux-tribal pop songs written for the Summer, recorded during the Winter of 2009.‘Daughter of Sunshine’ is an album of multi-coloured ecstatical indulgences, chiming guitars, Cash Converters’ keyboards and a bandwidth of beats that documents the band’s first year of music making; capturing their evolution from a glitter-obsessed two-piece, playing to handfuls of barely-amused friends in living rooms,  to the current five-piece, drum-heavy incarnation of the band packing venues ll over the place amid performances with Passion Pit, Jonathan Boulet and the like…
“…joyously experimental, infectious and unique.”- Tom Hawking, Inpress
“Rat Vs Possum seized the stage quite unlike any act we’ve seen at the seasonal Triple R showcases and offered themselves up as one of the acts to catch in 2010.”– Sam McDougall, Triple R
“This is one tribe I am more than happy to be cannibalised by.”Wilfred Brandt, TwoThousand
“…absolutely inspired neo-tribal bliss and shambolic, shouty freak outs.”- Lawson Fletcher, Mess and Noise
“Dan Kelly wished he was 21 and living on acid and baked beans again at the Rat Vs Possum gig.”- Dan Kelly’s rad facebook status

LANEOUS & THE FAMILY YAH
Laneous & The Family Yah make Grunty Indie Soul and Croon Punk for your earholes. Together with the all singing, all dancing Bird Fire Choir, Laneous navigates his band through abstract hip hop, punk and old soul. Alternatively cheerful, smooth and demented he cuts through the Family Yah’s at times fiercely syncopated, occasionally bombast and otherwise wobbly grooves with his trademark falsetto croon and charming hip hop murmurs. Bubblin’ up out of the artisan hot bed that is Brisbane’s West End, L&TFY are amongst the hardest working on the East Coast Touring Circuit. Their 2009 Debut LP “St Ill Regal” pushed the band onto the National stage with Triple J spinning Searing Life on High Rotation, a QSong Award and FBI rotation for Bubblegum, a triple j Unearthed ‘Parklife’ Win and critical acclaim around the country. This saw L&TFY spend the best part of a year on the road. Still though they found time to record and release 3 Limited Edition EPs – all now sold out and ascended to the vaults. Having finely tuned a high energy and dynamic live show the old fashioned way – through grueling trips up and down the coast, crashing on floors and fighting for DJ duties in the tour bus, their Sophomore Album “Found Things” is Laneous & The Family Yah at their most direct – a fight between the animal and the evolved, an uncompromised and highly joyous offering of soul, punk and hip hop. It’s release in September 2010 (through Bird Fire Records) cements L&TFY as amongst one of the most prolific acts in Australia.

DJ KRUSH
Known as one of the first hip-hop artists in Japan, DJ Krush (Hideaki Ishi) is a globally renowned producer, remixer and DJ. DJ Krush constantly expands his field – working on film soundtracks, television dramas and commercials, as well as live sessions with other musicians. In 1991, Krush’s remix TVO was a hit in the London club scene. He released his debut self-titled album in 1994 (Shadow Records), and since then has released eight solo records, including releases in Japan, Europe and the Unites States, and numerous singles, remixes and collaborations. With his music ranging from hip-hop to techno and acid jazz, some critics have labelled Krush the ‘Godfather of trip-hop’, referring to the multi-layered psychedelic element of his music.www.sus81.jp/djkrush

TRANS AM release THING

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

TAbluebrand2Most bands are too afraid to step up to the bat. They are scared that life is going to
throw them different kinds of curve balls. But for more than fifteen years, Trans Am
has fearlessly stepped up, taken their swings and thrown a few curve balls of their own.
Few bands can say they’ve toured the Canadian mountains with TOOL, and fewer still
can they played their first tour opening for Tortoise. Trans Am a-la 2010 is a band of
veterans unafraid to contradict themselves, confident in their identity even as
confounding as that identity has been for their fans over the years.

Thing is a wreckage of sorts.
The project was originally commissioned as a sci-fi, horror adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. When funding for that project fell apart, Trans Am forged on with their own album. To capture the feeling of exhaustion and paranoia demanded by Thing, Trans Am remained at their recording studio until the early morning, occasionally exiting to run up and down the hills of San Francisco. All vocals were recorded during recovery from these sessions. Thing features songs written entirely by the individual band members, as well as more collaborative efforts. Tracks were composed and/or recorded in Pescara, Italy; Portland, Oregon; Leon, France; San Francisco, California; Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean; London, England; Death Valley, California. The three members of the band currently reside in Portland, San Francisco and Washington, DC. For half of the tracks on Thing, Trans Am utilized a recording/composition strategy known as “Zombification.” Once a song was recorded, each of the band members (as well as anybody else in the studio at the time) would record multiple additional tracks without any reference to the previous ones. The song then forgot itself – and was almost unlistenable. After cellaring the un-dead music for up to a year, Trans Am would begin to peel back the layers of the song, usually arriving at something completely different.Thing was recorded between May 2008 and November of 2009, but the ongoing economic crisis did not affect the album’s lavish production budget.

Thing represents a further attempt by the band to further remove themselves not just from various indie-rock labels, but music itself. One of Thing’s requirements was that each track contain a completely non-musical element, preferably something with a sonic signature that was not even necessarily a sound.

With such history behind them, eight albums and last year’s live double LP and DVD What
Day is it Tonight?, Trans Am’s record speaks for itself. This new album does not
attempt to redefine the band’s image or return to any previous form, but
simply to speak for itself, a single palpable, particular… Thing…
TRANS AM’s THING out now on VALVE/MGM.

R E G U R G I T A T O R

What up… always.

Quan relocates to Melbourne after 5 years in Hong Kong.
Ben also shifts to Melbourne after spending time in Turkey and Berlin.
Same city, same time… what the hell is going on?

They set up some studios in rooms somewhere in the central city precinct and start work on album seven.
All in the spirit of creativity. After a brief collision with contemporary dance exponent Gavin Webber for the late 2009 live music/dance project Rockshow amid various solo explosions they find the time and space arise to invent some new tracks for 2010. The only thing that drives their continued persistence… the thrill of composition and performance.

The classic 3 piece with Quan, Ben and Peter now back on the live trail… follow the crumbs:

PEACHES in Asia…

After a nail raising tour in Australia early 2010 on the Big Day Out festival, Peaches returned to Europe to bring a volcano back from the dead in Iceland; played the romantic lead in a feature film Ivory Tower in Toronto with Gonzales & Tiga about ‘Jazz Chess’; before her solus perfectus performance of Peaches Christ Superstar last week in Berlin… Peaches in solo mode now embarks on her amazia Asia tour through Indonesia, Macau, China, Taiwan and Singapore.

The album I FEEL CREAM was released in 2009 and Peaches has been gradually making videos for every track on the album with the recent video for Billionaire by Cody Critcheloe from SSION and featuring Shunda K… check it out HERE.

PEACHES CHRIST SUPERSTAR featuring CHILLY GONZALES
Premieres Berlin March 25th. Also running on the 26th and 27th March 2010.
Peaches, the bad girl of electro punk, and Chilly Gonzales, piano virtuoso and rap entertainer, will bring their unique, completely stripped version of “Jesus Christ Superstar” the rock opera, to the stage of HAU 1. They’ll narrate the story of the last week in the life of Jesus Christ – from entering Jerusalem until the crucifixion, using songs from the musical. Peaches will sing all roles including: Jesus, Maria Magdalena, the disciples and the Pharisees, alongside Gonzales’ piano accompaniment. Don’t miss this concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar by two extra-ordinary performers!

Peaches: “To perform Jesus Christ Superstar as a one-woman-song is a crazy enterprise. Very demanding and very difficult. When I was sixteen I often sang the whole musical to myself all alone in my room. It tells an entire story without spoken text, only with vocals, in the style of a rock opera. Iʼm a performer, my concerts are extravagant and play with exaggerations. This project allows me to do without all this. I want to confront this task totally exposed, because it is a possibility. It’s a question of stamina. When I told Gonzales about this crazy idea he replied: ʻI want to accompany you on piano.ʼ Until then, we didnʼt know that we shared an obsession for this musical, and that secretly both of us already knew it by heart.”

Many credited the band for reviving the local indie music scene. They’re proud of that, too. After all, it’s for the love of music they started this journey in 2003. It’s a blessing to bring together a group of people who share the same passion and this was what they got – So Much More Inside (2004), Hip City (2006) and their latest effort We Satellites in 2008. Always challenging and exploring new sounds with each new project, their rewards include 3 acclaimed albums, two no.1 hits and numerous top 20s – that showcase their evolution, and a whole lot of fans.
Props to the music channels for believing in and helping Electrico, also know as ECO spread their music beyond our shores and kudos to the band for working their asses off touring the Asian circuit, and flying the Singapore flag at the coveted South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Texas in 2007 while spreading some of their magic to Los Angeles at the same time.
Electrico became the first Singapore band to receive a nomination at the 2005 MTV Asia Awards and a second in 2008 which culminated in awards for the Top Local Pop Song (for Runaway) at the 13th annual COMPASS (Composers & Authors Society Of Singapore) awards – the 3rd time in as many years – which also saw Dave taking the honors for the Young Composer of the Year. With recognition came responsibility, and the lads gave back undertaking a community project for troubled teens in the same year.

The online single Everybody’s Here – a child of the project.

Veterans in the local music scene, but definitely still learning. It helps that these self- confessed music and stage junkies, are friends before musicians. And perhaps that’s what keeps their sound evolving, adding new dimensions to their music and taking their fans along for the ride.

TUMBLEWEED

It’s been quite the success story for the mighty stoner rock outfit from Wollongong, TUMBLEWEED, since coming back from the grave in the latter part of 2009.

Late last year they started a series of reunion gigs at festivals such as Homebake and Meredith Music Festival and those shows went so well, before you know the ‘weed were doing The Espy NYE, a cuppla Big Days Out in Sydney and one in Melbourne and were also meant to appear at the illfated Lost Weekend in Brisbane.

Not bad for a band who hadn’t played together for 15 years….

The best part of all this is not only have all the gigs have gone marvelously well but the band have been loving it and don’t intend to stop in a hurry.

In the not too distant future you’ll see some TUMBLEWEED product hit the shelves. Firstly in the form of a double cd retrospective to be released on Aztec Music, (home of many a fabulous re-release).
This TUMBLEWEED collection will feature all the material released by their first home, Waterfront Records, and will come complete with a fantastic booklet of memorabilia.

The band have also been working on new material which is the real big news. That’s right, new material. TUMBLEWEED hope for at least one new single to be on the airwaves and available for purchase before the end of 2010. Stay tuned.

You may even hear something new at one of these gigs if you’re lucky.

EVEN sweet 16 in Brisbane!

16th Birthday in Brisbane

Australia’s most loved pop n’ roll threesome EVEN finally return to Brisbane for a one-night-only headlining blitzkrieg on Friday 30 April at The Hifi with very special guests The Gin Club and Little Scout. And it’s not just any old EVEN gig, it’s the band’s sweet 16th Birthday!

Even’s Ash Naylor reflects, “After leaving my post as a fruit and veg department manager in 1994 to pursue the dream of rock infamy, I could not have imagined the peaks Even would have climbed in the 16 years to follow. A lack of industry awards and platinum albums sales notwithstanding, we have carved out a chunk for ourselves in the twisting tree trunk of Australian rock. We have travelled Australia and overseas on numerous occasions, selling ice to the Eskimoes, rice to the Chinese and telling many of the world’s Grandmother’s how to suck eggs!! We have played alongside, and with many musicians who are dear to our hearts. At times we may have been encouraged to wear ill-fitting suits to pander to major label expectations, maybe even agreed to shoot video clips that could have fed a family for two years, but thank fuck we never compromised our music. I stand by each and every one of our songs and the spirit in which they were written, recorded and continue to be performed. We’ve been lucky. For an unmanageable band, we’ve managed pretty well I reckon.”

EVEN are on the cusp of releasing their sixth studio LP ‘In Another Time’, the new LP sees Ash Naylor, Wally Kempton and Matt Cotter delving back into the infectious warmth and comfort afforded by analogue recordings of the 60s. It’s as if the late 60s Kinks and contemporary Dandy Warhols had a head-on collision inside Ash’s mind with shiny car splinters landing on his fret board.

And EVEN will be launching latest singles ‘Back To Life’ and ‘Temperamental Flower’ on this tour. ‘Back To Life’ finds Melbourne’s favourite musical son and EVEN front man Ashley Naylor exploring his own and perhaps many of our painful, yet compelling love affair with music, “…you cannot join the herd, cos that would break your soul, thank God for rock n roll. It breaks your heart, but it brings you back to life…”

Some other punchy little facts on every music lovers’ fave pop n’ roll trio include:
• Only Australian band invited to play at the ATP v Pitchfork Festival in the UK
• Only Australian band invited to appear on the Posies’ Tribute LP released in North America
• Honoured by The Age EG for having the #36 Greatest Ever Australian Record (‘Less Is More’)
• Headlined the Rubber Records 20th Anniversary celebration
• Hand picked to support Paul Weller
• Recently wowed Festival crowds at Splendour in The Grass, A Day On The Green, Boogie! Sale Fest, Queenscliff Music Festival and headlined the final day of the Meredith Music Festival
• Headlined the full-capacity Earth Hour Concert at Fed Square in March 2009 where they were joined on-stage by friends and EVEN fans Chris Cheney, Nic Cestor, Kram, Iva Davies and Paris Wells.

A final word from Ash:
AS HARD AS I TRY TO AVOID THE CLICHE MISSION STATEMENT, THIS ALBUM FOR US IS LIKE BEGINNING AGAIN. ALL WE HAVE LEARNED IN 16 YEARS TOGETHER SUBCONSCIOUSLY INFORMS OUR RECORDING PROCESS YET EACH NEW SONG IS A NEW THRILL. ANY ONE OF US MAY NOT KNOW WHAT A SONG IS ACTUALLY HEADING TOWARDS UNTIL THE FINAL MIXDOWN.

WE TRY TO NOT BE INFLUENCED BY THE CONCEPT OF WHERE EVEN IS PEGGED ON THE METAPHORIC TOTEM POLE OF ROCK YET WE EXPECT THIS ALBUM TO HAVE A LIFE OF ITS OWN. I CAN PROUDLY SAY WE ARE ABOUT THE MUSIC, AS MUCH NOW AS WE EVER HAVE BEEN. SPRING HAS COME EARLY MUSIC LOVERS. THE NEW EVEN SINGLE ‘BACK TO LIFE’ HAS LEAPT OUT OF THE MORE ‘SWITHCED ON’ MODERN CHANNELS OF POP COMMUNICATION TO A RAPTUROUS RESPONSE.

THE BAND ARE BUNKERING DOWN AND PIECING TOGETHER THE NEW ALBUM ‘IN ANOTHER TIME’. IN KEEPING WITH THEIR CONSTANT PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE AND PURITY OF SOUND, THE ALBUM EVOKES THAT TIME WHEN MUSIC WAS KING AND NOT JUST A FOOTNOTE IN THE OVERLOADED, SATURATED, DILUTED, AND OVERWROUGHT WORLD OF POPULAR CULTURE WE NOW FIND OURSELVES IN.

ENJOY THE RIDE ON THE GOOD SHIP EVEN. ‘IN ANOTHER TIME’ DUE OUT MID 2010.
