MEN
Featuring JD Samson from Le Tigre… finally talk some body action across Australia, NZ and Asia early 2012.

MEN is a Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective led by LE TIGRE’s JD Samson, cult icon and leader in the LGBT community and are currently in the studio recording their second full length record. Their first record, ‘Talk About Body’ was released in February through IAMSOUND Records, a subsidiary of Sony Records, and in the UK through Sony proper.

After touring the record for the bulk of the year, playing Coachella, the Melt Festival, touring with CSS on a 6 week US tour (to name a few) and spending a lot of time enveloped by the new music industry, the band have decided to release their upcoming singles and subsequent full length record themselves, as well as to self-manage their career.

As a band that has emerged from the Feminist/Art/Punk scene in Brooklyn, they have always been focused on remaining a “DIY” project, and this moment seemed like the best time to take that step. In a society where the masses are rising up with protest by taking control of their needs, and what is owed to them, MEN feel that they are ready to take on the challenge, and help change the music industry by doing what they find passion in, and what they believe is real.

The band is also working with many different guest producers and guest musicians on their record including Alex Suarez (Cobra Starship), XXXchange, Santigold, Willy (Molly) Siegel of Ponytail, as well as collaborations from co-founders Emily Roysdon and Johanna Fateman (Le Tigre).

There are also some discussions of production or remix work from Azari and III, Boyz Noise, Jeppe, AdRock, Digitalism, Lauren Flax (Creep), Kim Ann Foxman, Teeth, CSS, and FM Belfast.

The band is certain that this change will bring them that much closer to their fans and that these feelings of equality will create a revolution in the music industry and in their own lives.

In the meantime MEN get to work and talk about body in Australia, New Zealand and some dates across Asia…

MEN is a Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective led by LE TIGRE’s JD Samson, cult icon and leader in the LGBT community. MEN focus on the energy of live performance and radical potential of dance music. Their music speaks of issues such as wartime economies, sexual compromise, and the demand for liberties through lyrical content and an inventive, high-energy stage show.

The group began in 2007 with the DJ/production/remix team of LE TIGRE members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. With LE TIGRE on hiatus, when the duo began to write new songs, it made sense to merge their efforts with JD’s other project HIRSUTE (Michael O’Neill, JD Samson, Emily Roysdon and Ginger Brooks Takahashi).

JD and Michael now comprise the core of MEN, with Johanna Fateman and artist Emily Roysdon contributing as writers, consultants, and producers. The band enjoys changing the shape of the project and collaborating every tour with new instrumentalists and visual elements. Last tour they were joined by Tami Hart of the band Making Friendz and this fall will be joined by percussionist Lee Free.

Selling out the physical copies of their debut self-released EP “MEN”, they released their debut album “Talk About Body” via IAMSOUND in 2011. The band have toured extensively all over the world, played Coachella 2011, have supported both Peaches and Gossip, a European/UK run and a headlining West Coast US tour, as well as a recent US tour in support of CSS.

20 January
Eleanor Friedberger (USA)

New York-based Eleanor Friedberger is best known as one half of the internationally renowned indie rock duo The Fiery Furnaces, formed with her brother Matthew. Friedberger has recently extended on the duo’s prolific nine album discography, releasing her debut solo album Last Summer in 2011. Drawing from the playful sounds of Motown, Funk and 1970’s radio-pop, Friedberger’s warm, piano-driven songs have a distinct and honest style.

27 January
Sam Amidon (USA)

Born in Vermont, singer-songwriter Sam Amidon has received worldwide acclaim for his reappropriation of old folk songs into modern contexts. Coined as one of the most interesting folk performers of our time, Amidon has collaborated with a myriad of artists including Nico Mulhly, Thomas Bartlett, Beth Orton, Shahzad Ismaily, Glen Hansard, and Bill Frisell.

3 February
Tyrone Noonan (AUS/USA)

Brisbane-born singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Tyrone Noonan is well known for his Aria-award-winning and multiplatinum-selling band george. Noonan has subsequently released the self-titled jazz debut Palimpsest (2004), followed by the critically-acclaimed rock mini-album Heavy Soul Part One (2006), and the full length debut album I Believe (2011). His international aspirations led to a three-month writing and recording period across the USA, followed by an extended period in London, before settling in his current home base of New York.

10 February
Brous (AUS)

Touted as a ‘human powerhouse’ by The Australian and a ‘prodigious chanteuse’ by the Rolling Stone magazine, Brous is the visionary pop project by Sophia Brous, backed by her band of gifted musicians made up of members of Pikelet, Ned Collette and Lost Animal. Inspired by soundtracks of 1950’s noir and exotica, underground Europop, psych and lounge, Brous has lent her voice to recordings by Augie March and Jens Lekman. At Up Late, Brous will perform songs from her critically acclaimed EP and preview her soon to be recorded album.

17 February
Jason Lytle (USA)

Californian-based performer Jason Lytle, is known for his work in the influential indie rock group Grandaddy. As a solo performer, Lytle has continued his success with albums such as Yours Truly, The Commuter (2009), filled with his signature vintage synths, fuzzed out guitars and affective melodies that made Grandaddy a force on the indie rock scene in the early 2000’s.

24 February
Halfway (AUS)

Formed by John Busby, Chris Dale and Elwin Hawtin, Halfway is a Brisbane-based group of musicians with a mutual love of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Big Star and The Replacements. Since the release of their debut album in 2003, Halfway has been awarded the prestigious Grant McLennan Fellowship and supported artists such as The Black Keys, Gomez, J Mascis and Josh Pyke. Halfway released their third album, An Outpost of Promise, in 2010.

2 March
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (USA)

One of America’s most beloved singer-songwriters, Will Oldham, better known since the late 1990s by the stage name Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, has garnered a cult following for his prolific discography, including sixteen studio albums. Oldham’s style pits shambling and often sparse music against his creaky, world-weary voice and literate lyrics. His unique style has appealed to many well-known musicians such as Johnny Cash, Steve Adey and Mark Kozelek, who have all covered some of Oldham’s most renowned songs. The artist’s recent release, Wolfroy Goes to Town (2011), has been described by the New Musical Express (NME) as ‘an absolute, unerring joy’.

PERHAPS YOU KNOW A.A BONDY BETTER THAN YOU THINK…

… and now so you really get to know him announcing a Brisbane show on Jan 23 at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Making his maiden voyage to our shores this January, A.A. Bondy. (the initials stand for August Arthur), hails from Birmingham, Alabama.

A grunge disciple originally via the critically adored alt-rock outfit Verbena, Bondy chose the solo route once Verbena disbanded in 2003 and in 2007 released his debut solo album ‘American Hearts’ which showed a marked change of musical direction mixing folk, Americana and swampy blues into a lethal concoction all of his own.

A second album, ‘When the Devils Loose’, followed in 2009 cementing Bondy’s abilities as a songwriter and featured the tracks ‘A Slow Parade’, ‘Mightiest of Guns’, ‘False River’ and the title track, which appeared in major TV shows Bones, One Tree Hill, House and Packed To The Rafters.

“Believers is nothing short of divine”. – Q

These are great songs, but Believers is all about the whole: a beautiful paced and structured album, with a powerfully singular mood” – Uncut

Most recently, A.A. Bondy has been spotted on the Triple J Hit-List with ‘The Heart Is Willing’, the first single from his new album ‘Believers’.

http://soundcloud.com/fatpossum/aa-bondy-the-heart-is-willing

And now we here in Australia get to experience what all the fuss has been about when A.A.Bondy visits (in full three piece band mode) for Sydney Festival (at The Famous Spiegeltent) and for club shows in Melbourne… and now Brisbane

“It seems like there’s a certain quality that you have to have to be a singer-songwriter in the ilk of A.A. Bondy and be able to pull it off, especially live. It’s something that doesn’t come from merely being a good songwriter, but from life experience. It’s what some might call “authenticity,” and Bondy certainly has it” – onethirtybpm.com

““AA Bondy, a voice of his own, and songs of desperation, love, and danger, Bondy provides a live experience that will suck you into his vision of sound.” – rabbitsblack.com

Don’t miss the Australian debut of A.A. Bondy live this January.

The cruise ship crashed the rocks not… as the tide really came in for Regurgitator on this August/Sept national tour in celebration of the Superthappyfuntimesfriends. SOLD OUT shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Geelong, Hobart, Adelaide and Perth left many adrift in the fury of the waves of enthusiasm on and off the stage. New Zealand’s Disasteradio along with our many fellow sailors left huge grins in anticipation of the coming swell when Regurgitator hit the stage in their floppy skeletons. It all ended in port town of Fremantle with a roaring group rendition of RIDE LIKE THE WIND with Regurgitator, Boys Boys Boys & Disasteradio all on stage with the elusive Christopher Kostic reaching full gusto on vocals. Thanks to everyone who came, reviewed and threw their lifebelts in the air for that past 5 weeks. We love you all!

VINYL rotations #7
Another laidback Sunday afternoon irregular moment to resume safe speed… and welcome back Kim Salmon for a cruising solo affair at West End’s Hi-Fi in odd rotations as spun by Consume. A succession of whatever slows you down… and parks itself in the front bar known as VINYL amid the street wilds of Boundary St. Free entry insured. See the seventh show of burnouts here:

SUN 4 DEC – VINYL rotations
The HiFi 125 Boundary St West End

2.00pm start rotation with HONKY KONG Dj Archie Jacobson along with latest cohort DJ SCORPIO.
Archie Jacobson never appears without his red Kaftan Shirt and flares, and always puts on a colourful and surprising show. Archie loves playing Dj supports for bands and artists relishes the opportunity to play tunes that excite the artist and the crowd, and tie in the musical themes of the event.

DJ Scorpio is the rural record spinner. 25 years of house parties and ad hoc paid gigs have fostered deep-seated insecurities as whether he is in fact a larger-than-life smokin DJ or merely another flawed human with a large record collection. He takes records out of their cover, puts ‘em on the platter, and plays ‘em.

3.15 – 4.00pm RICK FIGHTS
Rick Fights is Matt Somers from I Heart Hiroshima’s shadow figure. As I Heart Hiroshima he released 2 albums – Tuff Teef and The Rip; toured Australia, Europe, Vietnam and NZ and is now taking his songwriting urges directly to himself and to you. It’s insular music about imaginary figures; take one person, one electric guitar, one technically overloaded amplifier and a great deal of nerves. Whisk carefully, and leave to sit for 15-20 minutes. After recent supports with Aesop Rock, Kimya Dawson and Laura don’t be alarmed if it begins to make some noise.
rickfights.tumblr.com www.ihearthiroshima.com

4.45 – 5.45pm KIM SALMON
As a teen Kim Salmon blew his mind on the fusion of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, the stellar freakout of Sun Ra’s ‘Space is the Place’ and the generally unhinged groove of Can’s Ege Bamyasi. They showed him an alternative to just ‘playin the blooze’. Then Punk Rock came along! The earlier inspirations, however, where not idealistically opposed to the free expression espoused by the punk movement. Some of the freeform freakout fusion can be heard in Kim’s seminal band the Scientists on tracks like Nitro, Revhead and Human Jukebox throughout the nineteen eighties. Then Kim resolved to give free reign to that avant garde, jazz, and downright weird streak, in The Surrealists, progressing this band into a highly respected but conventional indie rock band. Touring around Europe, the USA and Australia, supporting U2, The Bad Seeds, Jon Spencer and the Cramps… and releasing best-selling album was 1993’s Sin Factory among other greats including the recent ‘Grand Unifying Theory’ with its polyrhythmic beats, its atonal keys, its heavy funk/punk grooves, its spaced out use of equipment buzz and Dictaphone. Then there’s Beasts of Bourbon, STM, Darling Downs… and the list goes on. Look forward to an afternoon of cruising sin.

With Quan currently lodged in Tokyo for the near future things feel a little quiet so how better to shake some shit by announcing our SUPERHAPPYFUNTIMESNEWYEARS2012SMASHUP at THE CORNER in Melbourne rather coincidentally on DEC 31.

KIMYA DAWSON
REVEALS HER “THUNDER THIGHS” THIS OCTOBER

BRAND NEW ALBUM FEATURES AESOP ROCK, JOHN DARNIELLE OF THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, NIKOLAI FRAITURE OF THE STROKES AND MORE

Kimya Dawson is not preaching to the choir, rather gladly admits standing in the middle, arms around each member, singing her upcoming self-released album, Thunder Thighs due out October 25th via Burnside Distribution. As Kimya’s seventh album, the assumed lo-fi sound has taken a delightful turn with the addition of pianos, backing choirs, string arrangements and several beats produced by rapper Aesop Rock. Although the personal touch of Kimya’s delicate strumming and the crackling of her soft voice still sit forefront, the backbone is a more mature solid arrangement that supports her powerful poetry.

The mother of one, who’s work with The Moldy Peaches and the Grammy Award winning, platinum selling soundtrack for the film Juno, did not record alone. With her latest release, Kimya has recruited several artists to join the aforementioned choir, appearances by Aesop Rock, John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats, Nikolai Fraiture of the Strokes, Daniel Bryan, Forever Young Senior Citizen Rock and Roll Choir, Olympia Free Choir, and her own five year old daughter Panda create an eccentric journey through Kimya’s revealing and honest songs. The first of 16 tracks to be uncovered is “All I Could Do,” a live performance for Kimya’s chickens in her backyard shot by Aesop Rock. The first track of the album acts as a musical snapshot of Kimya’s life, and is the perfect introduction to her latest release.

Return from Japan plus guests… and now additional show in Jakarta.
Electrical Soil Australia/NZ/Asia 2011.

Aside from MONO now making a stop at Newcastle’s SOUND SUMMIT on SUN 2 OCT, they also make a stop in Jakarta after Perth on OCT 11. Details below.

The electrical guests joining Mono for this forthcoming tour will not only be WINTERCOATS performing at the Melbourne Festival show but also NO ANCHOR playing Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, along with USURPER OF MODERN MEDICINE in Perth; and SLEEPMAKESWAVES in Sydney; and SECRET BIRDS in Brisbane. Plus in Auckland very special guests JAKOB…

NO ANCHOR known for their unique line-up (two bass players and a drummer) and their pummelling volume, Brisbane sludge rockers No Anchor play support. Drawing songs from their three releases, including their most recent album ‘Real Pain Supernova’ (available as a 2xLP and a free download from http://noanchor.bandcamp.com), No Anchor make rare interstate appearances with these shows. Expect trouble.

SECRET BIRDS amorphous Brisbane-born Tokyo-based brainchild of D.Black, takes an astral-tinged journey through higher mind synth jams, commune float folk, and boogie-fried psychedelia. Jamming on strung-out tribal zone dirges, and darkened drum-machine trances., calling to mind the likes of NNCK, Sunroof!, or the heavier aspects of High Wolf. Starting as a solo project in 2005, Secret Birds has seen more than 30 musicians drafted as members of the experience, adding their contributions, and moving on when the time is right.

SLEEPMAKESWAVES bold approach to creating innovative instrumental music has seen their tracks receive airplay nationwide and as far afield as the BBC. Their electric live performances have seen them play with Pelican, Signal Hill, Unitopia and Russian Circles. In 2009 they conducted their first headline tour of Australia, enjoying sold out shows and headlining Sydney’s annual Menagerie experimental music festival. In 2011 they released their debut album “…and so we destroyed everything” through Bird’s Robe Records. The album’s lush production and heaving musicianship has resonated with listeners worldwide – sleepmakeswaves follow the release with an extensive tour of Australia and will play their first international shows in Europe and Asia in 2012. Watch the video for (hello) cloud mountain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVIYNQzAjwo

USURPER OF MODERN MEDICINE from Perth are a heavy live drums and bass in combination with digital signal processing. Featuring members of popular Perth groups including Injured Ninja, Mile End, Mongrel Country and Carbuncle. Usurper of Modern Medicine builds hypnotic jams based on digital synchronized loops and live samples that build into dynamic lush walls of sound. Just returned from a Japanese tour, their debut album Acid Chess is out now on

JAKOB New Zealand power gazed that at times puts the post into rock, and at others kicking the whole bloody fence down, Jakob’s lush and textured take on the guitar/bass/drums format continues to broaden and enthrall with every performance and release. Their music is captivating and mesmerizing, the sedate becoming devastating in the blink of a crowd’s collective eye. Echoing the graduated inclines and unexpected progressions found in their music and the expansive landscapes of their surroundings, this Napier three-piece has developed consistently, if sometimes unpredictably, since their formation in 1998

Mono grind their electric crescendo in the tumultuous ground spread before them.

Blurring the boundary between art-metal and neo-classical, Japanese post-rockers MONO, hailing from Tokyo, have long established themselves over the past 12 years as the leading voice of epic majestic noise. Their instrumental compositions are powerful, sweeping studies in the limits of the musical spectrum; from rumbling subsonic lows to dizzying harmonic highs. Over the years, they have developed their vast and beautiful noise into something entirely majestic. Their colossal orchestrations often incorporate strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tymphani as well as guitar and drums, balancing all elements masterfully with each new release and live performance.

More recently MONO’s sound has dynamically shifted into something bigger and more cinematic, none more so than during their special New York concert where they elevated their already legendary live show with a 24 piece orchestra entitled “MONO and The Holy Ground Orchestra”. So far they have performed it in Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, London and New York (as documented in the Live CD/DVD release ‘Holy Ground’ on Temporary Residence)… and will include an exclusive Australian version for the Melbourne International Arts Festival on this 2011 tour.

“We have been playing music together as a band for over 12 years now and we feel we have come so far in that time, as musicians and as people. We want to push the boundaries of what is expected of rock musicians and draw upon those influences that heavily inspire us, namely Beethoven and other classical composers, and perform something very unique.”

“Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.” – Ludwig van Beethoven
