Consume has once again worked with the Gallery of Modern Art to co-curate their music series Up Late that commences on FRI 21 NOV. The exhibition opening night on OCT 31 will also feature Alex Murray-Leslie (CoS) DJ set. Then over NOV 21 to FEB 13 features BROKEN DOLL from Japan, SAMPOLOGY from Brisbane, FACTORY FLOOR from the UK, SHONEN KNIFE from Japan, CORNELIUS presents salyu x salyu from Japan, OSCAR KEY SUNG from Melbourne, MTNS from Brisbane and the special closing night with LAST DINOSAURS from Brisbane.

FUTURE BEAUTY UP LATE SET TO HEAT UP SUMMER AT GOMA

The Australian premiere performance of Japanese Harajuku band Broken Doll (Japan) will kick off the Future Beauty Up Late program at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) on 21 November.

Running in conjunction with the major summer exhibition, ‘Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion’, the Up Late series will run across seven Friday evenings between November 2014 and February 2015 and feature a line-up of international, national and local bands and DJs.

Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said the popular series offered visitors a unique opportunity to see the exhibition after dark with the addition of live music, fashion talks and Japanese-inspired food offerings.

‘Visitors can also shop in the exclusive Comme des Garçons Pocket store inside the Gallery and selling the labels iconic ‘Play’ line as well as wallets and fragrances. ‘‘Fashion in Action’ floor talks will be presented by local designers and style icons, and a specially themed food and bar menu has been developed by QAGOMA’s Executive Chef Josue Lopez, who has just returned from an inspiring trip to Tokyo,’ said Mr Saines.

Future Beauty Up Late will be presented on Friday 21 and 28 November, 5 December, 2014, and 23, 30 January and 6, 13 February, 2015. Doors open from 5.30pm and tickets will be on sale from 1 October.

On 21 November Harajuku band Broken Doll (Japan) direct from their UK tour will bring their signature kawaii-style to GOMA in their first ever Australian show.

On 28 November Brisbane Audio Visual Artist and Producer Sampology will deliver a customised, one-off performance inspired by ‘Future Beauty’.

On 5 December Factory Floor (UK) bring their post-industrial rhythms and textures to GOMA.

On 23 January 2015, the Up Late series continues with a performance by one of the most internationally recognised names in Japanese rock, iconic all-female trio Shonen Knife (Japan).

On 30 January legendary Japanese avant-garde musician Cornelius presents salyu x salyu (Japan), a creative collaboration with recording artist Salyu.

On 6 February a double bill of Australian talent will feature a sumptuous performance from producer/vocalist/songwriter Oscar Key Sung, and the ambient dream-pop of three-piece electronic indie band MTNS.

On 13 February indie pop four-piece Last Dinosaurs bring their energetic, upbeat melodies to close the Up Late series.

Curated by world-renowned fashion historian Akiko Fukai, ‘Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion’ is a comprehensive survey of more than 100 garments and accessories from the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute, Japan.

Known for their energetic performances and flamboyant Harajuku-style fashion, Tokyo four-piece Broken Doll are a 1980s-inspired Japanese punk-rock band with an ever-growing following as street fashion icons, influenced by their unique marriage of music and fashion. Exemplifying their distinctive ‘visual kei’ aesthetic, members of the band also manage a fashion label and store in the trendy Shimokitazawa district of Tokyo. Upon the release of their 2014 single ‘I Miss You’, Broken Doll will channel the styles of Blondie and The Sex Pistols with their robust punk-rock sound and colourful fashion, opening ‘Future Beauty Up Late’ with an experience unlike anything presented at QAGOMA to date.

Pioneering Brisbane-based Audio Visual Artist and Producer Sampology (Sam Poggioli) is known for his unique productions blending music and visual experiences. Drawing imagery from popular culture and incorporating a distinctive sense of humour,, his innovative approach to mixed-media live performance has earned praise from critics at The New York Times and The Independent and inclusion at international creative festivals such as Edinburgh Fringe Festival, South by Southwest (SXSW), Splendour in the Grass, Tropfest and Big Day Out. For ‘Future Beauty Up Late’ Sampology will present a custom produced, one-off AV show inspired by the last three decades of Japanese fashion and culture.

UK based electronic trio, Factory Floor possess a genre-defying sound that stretches across techno, minimal, acid and post-industrial rhythms and textures, and has earned them comparisons to industrial greats Joy Division, The Fall and Throbbing Gristle. Shonen Knife is an all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop and ’70’s Rock and Hard Rock, as well as early punk-rock bands such as The Ramones and Buzzcocks, the trio crafts stripped-back melodies with simple and catchy lyrics in Japanese and English. They continue to be one of the most internationally recognised names in Japanese rock, with their distinctive upbeat tunes gaining them international praise and tours across the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Credited with opening up the international pop market to Japanese and international underground bands, their prolific discography includes over twenty albums, with the recently released Overdrive (2014) receiving critical acclaim. With over 30 years’ experience performing and recording, the band continues to influence music throughout Japan and the world.

salyu x salyu is the creative collaboration of Japanese recording artist Salyu and producer Cornelius. Salyu made her recording debut in the fictional band Lily Chou-Chou, whose group’s album Kokyu (2001) featured the song ‘Kaifuku No Kizu’, later used in the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003). Joining forces with one of Japan’s most influential record producers, Takeshi Kobayashi in 2004, Salyu released three albums as a solo artist before collaborating with Cornelius in 2011. salyu x salyu’s concept album S(o)un(d) beams (2011) combines Salyu’s sweet vocals with Cornelius’s characteristic experimental and exploratory sound to produce distinctive, sometimes dissonant, upbeat experimental pop melodies.

Formed in 2013, MTNS are a three piece Brisbane-based electronic indie band who rose to prominence after winning triple j Unearthed’s 2013 QMusic BIGSOUND Live competition. They have since toured nationally with Australian artists Andy Bull, The Kite String Tangle, Thelma Plum, Tigertown and Wolf and Cub. Featuring textured synths and down-tempo beats, MTNS craft ambient dream-pop melodies described by The Sydney Morning Herald as “the kind of sound you want to feel, hear, become close to” in a five-star review. MTNS released their debut EP Salvage in 2013, featuring the critically acclaimed single ‘Lost Track of Time’, distributed by Create/Control.

Brisbane-based indie pop four-piece Last Dinosaurs produce energetic, upbeat melodies which have received praise for their maturity and cohesion. Their debut EP Back from the Dead (2010) was followed by an Australian top 10 debut studio album In a Million Years (2012), both released on Dew Process/Universal Music. In 2012, Last Dinosaurs played an Australian national sold out tour, and have since been featured at festivals including Splendour in the Grass, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Falls Festival and Southbound. They have also supported international acts Foals, Foster the People, and Matt and Kim. A 2013 international tour took their brand of “melodic fizz” (The Guardian) to South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan. Last Dinosaurs’ second album is set to be released in 2015.
