here comes LAST QUOKKA with new album Take the Fight to the Bastards OUT MAR 14

Posted

The world is inflicted with a plague of greed – the fat corporate core has plundered and shit on the peripheries for too long, it now bites back with the vengance of it’s adaptive survival screamin’ and riffin’ with the coarse cut of reality come home. LAST QUOKKA takin’ flight to the nation with new album and tour – TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE BASTARDS out FRI 14 MAR.

Take The Fight To The Bastards is the LAST QUOKKA’s in full flight. The recent addition of Dion Mariani (ex The Flairz) joining Justin Zanetic on guitars has pushed the band into riff overdrive. Fuzzed out hooks accompany the relentless rhythm machine that is Carlota Rivera on drums and Ray Grenfell on bass. Resulting in a sonic force that acts as canvas for vocalist Trent Rojahn to spit and sing his sardonic and poignant chunks of poetry over. No piece of Australian culture is left unturned, from anthemic protests against the Cost Of Living crisis to sci-fi-esque resurrection fantasties of extinct megafauna (Thunder Duck), and odes to old country pubs being ruined by tourists (Yankee Satellite) or pubs just being ruined by corporations (Save Our Pubs), the album has something for everyone.

Trent racks up a track by track album cue…

1. Thunder Duck

The year is 2025 and we find ourselves rotting in the socioeconomic swamp of late stage capitalism. However, we mustn’t fear. Scientists have successfully raised ancient Australian megafauna, the Bullockornis from the depths of fiction and natural history. It has been given one mission: to devour the rich. Go, Thunder duck! Go!

2. Save our Pubs

We’ve fucking had it! All of our favourite old pubs are being bought out by Woolworths and other shit rich and powerful companies. They are then being renovated and turned into yuppy wastelands. Enough is enough! Save our institutions!

3. Cost of Living

While the richest Australians make a million dollars an hour, we are slaving away just to make ends meet. And while the prices continue to rise, they are matched by rising sea levels directly related to the activity of these rich bell-ends! We never want to pay $6 for a capsicum ever again.

4. Yankee Satellite

In 1979, American satellite the ‘Skylab Space Station’ crashed through our atmosphere and broke up over Australia’s Nullarbor desert. With a local newspaper promising $10,000 to bring them a piece of this satellite, people flooded in from all over the world to join the search. But ol’mate couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the $10,000 or all these people flooding his town. He just wants everyone to piss off so he can have a knock-off pint at the pub.

5. Out on the weekend

Inspired by Tennessee Ernie Ford’s 1955 song ‘16 Tonnes’ this song is a cry of the working class who are sick of breaking their backs to line the pockets of rich. Surely we are meant for more than this, and we have the numbers to put an end to it. Let’s build a new society, new communities, who make family with the trees.

6. Stupid White Bastard

Inspired by everyone’s favourite captain, the Matilda’s Sam Kerr, who after being kidnapped by a cab driver in London and then arrested by a cop called the cop a “stupid white bastard”. Sam just keeps getting better and better with everything she does. The song ends with a line that encompasses the meaning of the whole song: “there are no good cops!”

7. French Shrimp

A cosmic journey through the gateway of a rock-pool guided by multidimensional shrimp with moustaches.

8. OTC

An aggressive retort to the idea that anyone can become rich if they just worked hard enough. The implication that the poor are lazy is infuriating. The rich largely inherit their wealth and swan around from function to function in a big circle jerk. So, if you’ve been working your ass off and want a day in the couch to eat chicken and watch cricket, go for it! You’ve earned it!

9. Flashing Colour Screens

This song is a biting criticism of the apathy of suburban life. It’s easy to not give a shit in your boring suburbs without war on your door step. It’s the apathy of these suburbs that allow genocides.

10. Murujuga (DBH)

Woodside’s Burrup Hub mega-project at Murujuga in North West Western Australia is a disaster for climate and culture. Woodside has plans to expand its gas facilities and pump billions of tonnes of deadly carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia is known as Murujuga to traditional custodians, a deeply sacred place that contains the largest, oldest collection of Aboriginal rock art in the world. That artwork is under threat from dangerous chemical emissions.

11. Waiting Room

A love song about a man navigating the underfunded public health system whilst having a pervasive fear of death. The song juxtaposes the panic of being stuck in this system with the love felt by being support by the love of his life.
