UP LATE GOMA AUGUST 2019

Posted

Consume collaborated with GOMA to assist in curating their next UP LATE program this AUGUST built around the Ben Quilty/Margaret Olley exhibitions.

UP LATE RETURNS TO GOMA THIS AUGUST

Up Late returns to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) every Friday night in August with live music from The Herd, Clare Bowditch, Custard, Pub Choir, Midnight Oil’s Jim Moginie and more.

Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said Up Late would activate the Gallery’s two major winter exhibitions, ‘Quilty’ and ‘Margaret Olley: A Generous Life’, in a relaxed after dark atmosphere, with the bonus of live music, bars and pop-up performances.

‘The Up Late program includes a not-to-be-missed live performance by Australian singer-songwriter Clare Bowditch on Friday 23 August, and a night with legendary Australian hip hop group The Herd on Friday 30 August,’ Mr Saines.

Tamsin Cull, Head of Public Engagement, QAGOMA said artist Ben Quilty was a long-time fan of The Herd and their politically charged lyrics.

An eight-member collective of rappers, singers, and musicians, The Herd has released five acclaimed albums since 2001, and been strong critics of ingrained Australian prejudices with songs such as ‘77%’ and ‘The King is Dead’. Their version of Redgum’s song about the Vietnam War, ‘I Was Only 19’, is a rare cover that has become as iconic as the original.

The Up Late program kicks off on Friday 2 August with the energising double bill of interactive singalong sensation Pub Choir and Jim Moginie and the Family Dog. Elder statesmen of Brisbane indie rock band Custard will perform on Friday 9 August, and Yolngu artist and Milingimbi (Yurrwi) man Gawurra will entrance audiences with his mesmerising sounds on Friday 16 August.

During Up Late, chamber ensemble Nonsemble will bring the art of Margaret Olley and Ben Quilty to life with pop-up performances of reimagined pop hits and experimental musicality.
