RATATAT

Announcing a flock of shows across Asia as well as some changes to the schedule of the Australian tour that blasts off later this month on the Maitland GTM2016 starcruiser!

To allow some space to between Sydney and Melbourne and with all the interest directed towards the Friday Melbourne show the decision has been made to focus on the Friday and thus the Thursday Melbourne show has been dropped from the run. Tickets from Thursday will be valid for the Friday night show. Now one night in Melbourne only – FRI 29 APR at 170 RUSSELL ST.

And with Mutemath cancelling their upoming tour this has freed up The Metro in Sydney that same night so a further decision was taken to shift the show from the Enmore to the more intimate surrounds of The Metro. Tickets already purchased are again valid for the new venue and of course with both shows refunds are available if need be. So now Sydney is – WED 27 APR at THE METRO.

Apologies for any inconvenience with these changes.

Joining RATATAT for these shows will be KIRIN J CALLINAN all the way from hyperfed Sydney will be fronting up as special guest on the Sydney, Melbourne and Perth shows. Teaming up as openers for Sydney and Melbourne are FRIKSTAILERS tripping back from Mexico City.

Opening proceedings in Perth… THE COMMUNITY CHEST as led by Adem K from Turnstyle.

And now following the departure from Australia after the Perth show at METRO CITY on MAY 5 and the finale GTM2016 in Bunbury RATATAT will now embark on 2 weeks of shows across Asia playing Thailand, Indonesia, China and Vietnam. All dates listed below and tickets on sale this week. The 6 dates in China will be presented by Noisey.

Breathe on high altitude.

In a supreme matter of being for the here and now RATATAT make a rerun as they return to Australia for the 2016 GROOVIN THE MOO festival as well as a handful of club shows. Last year saw a tour that covered all quarters this way… Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and India. A great new album Magnifique, and all quarters the other way… US, Canada, Europe, Mexico including Coachella 2015, Barcelona’s Primavera, Governor’s Ball… and of course the incredible set at Meredith Music Festival 2015.

RATATAT bio:
Released its fifth full-length album, Magnifique, on XL Recordings in July 2015 – a solid five years after Mike Stroud and Evan Mast’s last release, LP4 from 2010. Following up on the experimental sounds of LP3 and LP4, Ratatat return to their core guitar-driven sound on Magnifique. “I feel like it’s our strongest record,” Evan says. “We did it in spurts. We made a few trips to different locations where we’d set up a studio and work.” Mike and Evan spent time in Port Antonio, Jamaica, upstate New York (at the same studio whereLP3 and LP4 were recorded), Long Island, New York and at their own studio in Brooklyn.  Combining the bedrock beats and primordial riffs from their first two albums with the sonic experimentation and production prowess of LP3 and LP4, Mike and Evan arrived at a new plateau with Magnifique. Formerly known as Cherry, New York’s rock-meets-electronica duo Ratatat feature multi-instrumentalist/programmer Evan Mast and guitarist Mike Stroud. Mast was also the brains behind the pretty laptop pop of E*vax, and with his brother E*Rock he ran the indie electronic label Audio Dregs. Stroud also played, in the studio and on tour, with artists including Ben Kweller and Dashboard Confessional. Between these duties (and Mast’s job as a graphic designer), the duo found time to work on their collaboration. In his bedroom studio, Mast worked on beats and song ideas that he gave to Stroud to develop while the guitarist was on the road. Though Mast and Stroud began working together in 2001, things really began to come together for the pair in 2003: in May, while they were still called Cherry, they played their first gig; by September they changed their name to Ratatat; and that November they issued their first single, which had a limited run of 1,100 copies, on Audio Dregs. Dates with Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and Battles followed, and Ratatat signed to XL Records. The duo’s self-titled debut album arrived in spring 2004, coinciding with another round of dates with bands including !!!, Electrelane, and Tortoise. Classics appeared in 2006, followed by a self-released remix album. Ratatat then took a different approach to their third full-length effort, emphasizing live percussion and keyboards while toning down their familiar mix of programmed beats and guitars. Recorded in several short weeks, LP3 was released in July 2008, followed by the more experimental LP4, released just shy of two years later in 2010.

No more than six words were uttered throughout the show. The music did the talking.

Ratatat brought their shredding brilliance to The Tivoli Theatre for a performance that left this reviewer grinning with joy.

Constantly pushing the envelope of experimentation, Ratatat continue to achieve and soar, with their infectious marriage of the strangest samples, they left the crowd sweaty and heaving for an encore.

…the ingenuity of their visual ideas push this sense of dynamism even further, allowing each song to really occupy its own space… that reap the maximum benefits of this synaesthesiac experience.

KIRIN J CALLINAN
Kirin J Callinan (guitarist, linguist, activist, gymnast, moodist and Instagram nudist) has had a busy time cracking the binary code of social media with a naked bathtub sojourn alongside tour mates Mac Demarco & GUM, a year of shows including glittering sets at Paris Pitchfork Festival, the Terrible CMJ Party NYC alongside Empress Of and Leif, and opening for Tame Impala at the celebrated Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

FRIKSTAILERS (Argentina/Mexico)
One of Latin America´s most respected electronic acts is coming back to Australia after playing at the 2015 Mona Foma, Sydney Festival and Friday Nights at NGV for the Jean Paul Gaultier’s exhibit. This two piece combining dancehall, hip hop, baile funk, cumbia, dub, house, kuduro, electro and techno are ready to bring back their tropical futurism for a tour that will take place alongside the New York giants “Ratatat”. Pronounced freak-stylers… rose from the eclectic Buenos Aires cumbia scene, turning the genre on its head with their unique style that saw Fader magazine describe them as “cumbia circuit-bent through neon dance tunes that interpret the most electric side of South America”. Bringing their incomparable brand of South American rhythm to London in December 2012, they headlined the taste-making Boiler Room and played a hyper-animated show at the New Empowering Church. The duo of Rafa Caivano and Lisandro Sona released their first LP on ZZK Records entitled “En Son De Paz” in 2013. This 12 track journey through time and space features 80’s synths and an elegant dose of psychedelic tropicality, and was chosen as one of the top 10 albums of Latin indie music  by the prestigious Spanish newspaper El Pais.

THE COMMUNITY CHEST
Led by Adem K from Turnstyle, they roll the dice with their indie-rock and heavy lean on analog synths, spacious arrangements and obscure samples. After the release of 2013’s “Top Of The Hour” album, Adem K had committed to a 2 year project, producing an album of new material for his first band Turnstyle, celebrating their 20th Anniversary in 2015.  To keep up momentum, Adem suggested to The Community Chest they create songs from the ground up, in the studio, track by track. No rehearsals, no warning given that a member of the band may have to record a performance at any given second. So for just over a year, the band got together weekly, with band members rarely missing a session. “Make your decision now and live with it forever” released October, 2015. Recorded to tape by the band, edited by production maestro and bass player Laurie Sinagra and finally polished in London by Paul Tipler (producer of Stereolab, mixer of Broadcast), “Make your decision now and live with it forever” is a move towards an off the cuff, improvised approach hinted at on a song or two from their debut. All without forsaking hooks, melodic twists and danceable komische rhythms.
